Pillow Buying Tips

Having a comfortable black pillow to sleep on each night goes a long way to making sure you get a good night’s rest. Most people spend 1/3 of their life sleeping, so it makes sense that you need a good pillow to rest your head on. There are a lot of brands available today and this can make buying a pillow difficult. Here are some tips to help you out the next time you go pillow hunting.

How Big?
Do you just sleep on your pillow at night or do you like to snuggle with it? How big is your bed? These are two very important questions. Most people will just need to make sure they buy the correct pillow size to match their bed. If you own a single, then buy a single sized pillow. A queen bed should have two queen sized pillows and a king bed two king sized pillows. If you like to snuggle your pillow, then try buying the next pillow size up. You may even find that a king sized pillow on a single bed is just what you need.

Money, Money, Money
Like everything thing in this world, you can either spend a lot or a little on your pillow. First determine your budget. You might like the idea of a bed full of pillows, but buying cheap pillows may mean you can’t sleep well at night. If your budget is limited, try buying just one or two quality pillows and then buy anymore you need at a later date. It is better to have a good night’s sleep instead of ending up with a bunch of foam $5 pillows that feel like rocks.

How Do You Sleep?
Do you sleep on yoru side, back or stomach? Common or flat pillows are great for people who sleep on their back, but spend some time and have look at the other shapes and designs of pillows available. You may find that a specific pillow shape has been custom built to match the way you sleep.

Foam or Feathers?
The fill of your pillow is almost as important as the size. Foam pillows maintain their shape during the night, but some people complain that they can be a little too hard. Down pillows are squishy and the exact opposite of foam pillows. They lose their shape fast but many find them to be much better to sleep on. Regardless if you go for a foam or down pillow, always make sure you are buying a quality pillow. You may also want to check if your down or feather pillow is hypo-allergenic, just incase you suffer from allergies.

Lofty Pillows
How lofty a pillow is depends on how well it is packed. This only applies to feather pillows as obviously foam pillows don’t lose their shape. If you prefer a feather pillow that doesn’t lose it’s shape, then go for one that has a tight fill. This will make sure that it holds its shape longer.

Pillows That Tickle
If you buy a feather pillow, make sure that the cover is tightly woven so that feathers don’t stick out of the pillow. There is nothing worse than being poked by feathers or waking up in the morning and finding that some feathers have escaped from your pillow during the night.

Keep it Clean
Like any bedding, always be sure to clean your pillow regularly. You will find that down and feather pillows come with special manufacturer instructions regarding how to clean them. Make sure you follow these to avoid causing any unwanted damage to your precious pillow.
